Suspicious looks from the white ranch hands notwithstanding, Hawk was enormously impressed with the Circle S ranch. He could only imagine the wealth such a ranch could generate. And though some of the men narrowed their eyes when they saw the buckskin-clad half-breed Sioux inspecting the grounds at Amanda’s side, others had heard that it was Hawk who had come to Amanda’s rescue on her recent adventure. Those men, who didn’t care whether Hawk was half or all-Indian or not-at-all Indian, only that he had been there for Amanda when she needed help, came forward with a smile and an extended hand.

“I’d say you’ve won over my brother and about half the ranch hands,” Amanda said. She and Hawk had paused to look into a corral where undersized calves were kept with their mothers to give them a better chance to grow. “By this evening you’ll have three-quarters of the men.” Amanda sighed. “Of course, some of the men will never accept you because of your Indian blood. There’s nothing you could do to make them like you.”

Hawk couldn’t take that personally. He’d faced bigotry virtually every day of his life, in one form or another. Long ago he figured he had two choices: either live his life, perpetually furious at the way he was treated because of his mixed-blood heritage and because he was born a bastard, or do all he could not to think too long or hard about the people to whom those things meant so much.

Hawk chose the latter.

“And where did you say your other sister was?” Hawk asked, paying minor interest to the small pen where yearling calves were kept.

Would it ever be possible for the Sioux to raise their food as the white man did? Hawk asked himself, studying the pen. It seemed unlikely, but Hawk realized that something had to change. The Sioux couldn’t go on the way they had in the past.

“Vanessa’s in Fargo right now,” Amanda answered.

“Really?” Hawk asked, honestly curious.

“She’s often there in court.” Amanda smiled up at him. “I’m glad you’re here. I’m not pleased with the circumstances, but I’m glad you’re here.”

“So am I,” Hawk replied, but it was only a half-truth.

Actually, he didn’t feel comfortable at the Circle S. He couldn’t feel at ease as Amanda’s lover while her brother was so nearby. Hawk knew that though he had earned some of Sonny’s respect, he wouldn’t be able to keep it if the elder Wright ever discovered how passionate Amanda had become because of an Indian.

Outside the building the sound of two men talking interrupted Amanda’s reply, and she quickly dropped Hawk’s hand.

“There’s something else I want to show you,” Amanda said, her blue eyes bright and alive as she quickly stepped out of the building. Hawk followed her, wishing they were somewhere else, not surrounded by people. “It’s our new colts. They’re the pride and joy of the Circle S.”

In a small barn which was clean and orderly, Amanda showed Hawk the six young colts, each in its own pen.
